Thinking

April 16th, 2008

Things I think about: food, coffee, being passionate about my work, quilts, fabric, Loki, Tim, classes, going back to school, work, work, work, am I eating enough fruit, going to the farmer’s market, Web 2.0, interns, photography, SPEA, The Commission for Sustainability, recycling, living green, whether I can see the New Pornographers in concert, being a good person, travel, friends, organic food, allergies, natural leave-in conditioner, exercise, switching to gmail, having a baby someday, paint colors, books, The Clash, religion, gardening, health care, family, whether I should get new highlights, crosswords, publicity, and politics.

In no particular order, and not meant to be inclusive or exclusive.

Deconstruction

January 6th, 2008

There has been deconstruction, construction, assembly, anchoring, altering and general moving stuff around.  Millions of dollars and 5 months later, we are finally moving in.  One fine day there will be pics to follow.

Thanks for all the positive comments about the blog, and thanks to Tim for figuring it all out.  I wanted something where people could leave comments, and since the blog was the only part of the previous site that we really used we decided to switch over to wordpress.   I can’t believe that I’ve been writing off and on for about 6 years!  Though I’m not sure 2003 counts, as there are only about 5 posts from that year.

Forward Progress

January 3rd, 2008

Sorry it is a little off center, but it becomes increasingly hard to photograph larger quilts in my increasingly small house.  New Years day proved to be snowy and cold, a perfect day to knock out a large chunk of sewing for the top of Thien’s Block of the Month quilt.  I am loving how it looks.  The fabric colors are slippery, changing from brown to tan to green to yellow depending on the light.

Oh, yeah.  We also updated the blog in the past few days. Comment away.

OK Vday Baby Go

February 14th, 2007

Know these are old, but because its valentine’s day, and because I irrationally love these videos:

Here It Goes Again

and

A Million Ways to Be Cruel

While we weren’t as synchronized, these remind me of Kitchen Dancing with Cyn. And one more…

AMWtbC on ice

The last one is for Abby, wherever she may be.

The Returns

November 8th, 2006

I don’t remember whose idea it was. In 1992 on a snowy November morning , Dad and I drove to an airplane hangar at the old Stapleton airport at about 4am to see Bill Clinton speak on his last whirlwind tour the day preceding and of the elections. He was late. We waited. And waited…but it was worth it. I was excited about the election and I wasn’t even old enough to vote. But maybe because I wasn’t old enough to vote, I was pretty self righteous at 17 and thought that a vote could change the world. And even though I couldn’t vote in that election, I felt part of the process.
Fast forward a few years and though I an a regular voter am sort of jaded about the whole election process. Especially 2000. But yesterday was exciting all over again. Well, I guess not really here in Texas, but in other parts of the country. It can make a difference, and will.

So, sarahstim.com went down and is pretty much back up in its retro glory. This is the first design dating from maybe 2001? I can’t remember exactly when. I have updated my book page (I know you were all really waiting for that), and we added some photos from the botanic gardens and a wedding Tim went to in IN earlier in October.

We saw Social Distortion recently, which was really fun. We rarely get out to concerts anymore…and that was a good one. I don’t know if the movie I want to see has come and gone, or not released yet. Also? Why are movie websites so terrible? I mean really.

I need to set a regular blog schedule because the new job and new traffic is kicking my ass. But I’ll be back. But not in a second term Arnold way. Really.

Who Us?

December 22nd, 2005

No, we aren’t obsessed with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, why do you ask? We watched it a few weeks ago and I was a little suprised at the progress (albiet somewhat hidden and only hinted at) messages. Its okay if you look different because our differences is what makes it all work. And it is okay if you are gay, er, I mean a dentist at heart. Because the differences is what makes it work.

Tim and I are staying here for the holidays, getting the little things done that we’ve ignored, and generally having a low pressure, fun relaxing holiday. I’ve got craft projects lined up (some knitting, embroidery, softies, quilts, etc), some recipes to tackle, books to read, movies to watch. Currently slightly obsessed (though much later than the rest of the world) with watching the BBC version of The Office. Which of course led to the look up of the Mahna Mahna song that is stuck in my head. Doo Doo do do do (mahna mahna).

Oh, and speaking of obesessions, if you are obsessed with blogs like me, and don’t know about RSS feeds, call me. I can tell you about my love of Bloglines. Call me.

If Tim and I were one person instead of two…fractal art quilts.

I am so relieved. There is so much to worry about in the world, but I am glad to know that something important is being taken care of by someone so capable. That might be the weirdest headline I’ve read in awhile.

And I wonder if the SGBC would still be going strong if we invited a third official member. That dude reads a bit of everything! He and I both read Gilead this year, I wonder what he thought of it. But then he also read the DaVinci Code, which Ashley and I are avoiding like the plague. Speaking of books, the book list is pretty much always up to date.

Thanks to Suzy who is sending along smashed pennies that her friends have started collecting for me from STL. And thanks to my parents sent along in their care package a smashed penny from Breckinridge.

Casting On

June 13th, 2005

Let me first just say (to get it out of the way), that according to my cursory web research communists don’t seem to really celebrate birthdays at all, much less weekend long birthday celebrations. Birthdays don’t have enough to do with ’sticking it to The Man’ or celebrating the workers, as it is more ‘Yay me’ and the communists aren’t really down with that. With that clarified…Happy Birthday Tim! Tim had a birthday this past weekend, turned thirtyfrickintwo. 32. He celebrated by helping someone move in the morning and laying sod at someone else’s house in the afternoon. Sweet, eh? But we did sort of stretch it out over the weekend, making his favorite calzones and persimmon pudding on Friday, and then a movie on Sat night after all the activity, and grilling a rack of lamb avec squash and grilled okra (I know! With the okra!) on Sunday.

Hopefully tomorrow during a “break” at work, I will be able to finish and bind off my first scarf. I made it with just some regular stitches on 15 bamboo needles, which are HUGE. But they were just right for the fuzzy yarn that I picked out. I think it is a little too wide though for my tastes. I have another ball of the same yarn, so I think I will try again, 1/2 the width. Our last knitting class is on Wednesday, and I hope to learn decreases and increases, though I have a hard time listening to any instruction at this point. Plus, our knitting instructor has the strangest background so I am constantly distracted by the totally incredible bits about her past that she just throws out there. Lets call her BJ. BJ mentions that she was a nuclear engineer for 20 years in the military, much of which was in Germany. Ok. Oh wait, she also owned a language school there and has traveled the world teaching international business communication. Oh wait, she now to owns a fiber studio where she spins her own yarn and makes art quilts and knits. I mean, come on. And then last class she casually mentions that she also grew up AMISH. And a few years ago, she wrote a letter to a guy that she grew up next door to when she was 10 and he replied and a few months later…they got married. This stuff? Doesn’t happen to real people. But you can’t just make up ex-Amish nuclear engineers who happen to spin and knit, teach international business communications and who also owns a house in Laguna Beach, which she nicely clarified for us wasn’t hit by the mud slides recently. Phew. I wonder what we will learn in this week’s class?

Freaky Food

May 17th, 2005

I laughed so hard I couldn’t breathe. My stomach was hurting, and I couldn’t see, but tried to keep my eyes clear so I could read more. Every time I think of the miracle Urkel-O’s, it starts over again. Steve, Don’t Eat It! is hysterical, though if you are faint of heart you might want to be careful. And also? Warning: Language. It sort of reminded me of the Weight Watchers Cards which sort of circulated around a few years ago, but is worth a look at again. I love the warning for the bad little mushrooms, the obessive disorder meal and the magical pond. Sigh. So funny. What else is work “lunchtime” for if not to look and laugh at freakish foods?

Funiculars

January 31st, 2005

I love finding these web museums of sorts and can spend hours looking at the home on the web for Drive-in Movie Theaters, or Abandoned buildings in Indiana. But this is my newest love is reserved for funiculars. Tim and I didn’t ride up the one in Montmartre in Paris, we toughed it out with the stairs up to the top of Sacre Coeur. But I did ride up this one in Pittsburgh on a freezing night with Pilar, Suzy, Joann and Newman.

Good times.
