Peachy

Does it make me a horrible person that I sometimes forget what fab kitchen implements I actually own? Like an ice cream maker? Earlier this week, I made green tea ice cream for a program at the library and it was delicious and a big hit. The same night I realized I had a bag full of fresh peaches from the farmer’s market. What to do? Make ice cream! Well, actually sorbet. So I peeled and blended on Monday and made this today, Wednesday. And while it was quite good, I can’t help thinking that it tasted a little, well, like old peaches. Next time I’ll peel, blend and freeze all in the same day.
1.2 million dollars later, our BelNeLux rail passes are purchased! Low countries here we come. Too bad this looks a little complicated, and possibly sold out, the lineup looks fantastic!

Just so you know it isn’t all fabric auditions around here, there is actual sewing going on. I also think I figured out a pattern for my mom’s quilt. Maybe some stacking and maybe some whacking.
As part of my facebook icon, I recently added that I was in the Jacob Camp and I’ve had a lot of questions about what that means, but it is so lame and both Tim and I are so into them, its sort of embarassing. I should just update my book list, but if you’ve read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (or really book two, New Moon) and can seriously make a case for Edward, let me know. I’m the captain of Team Jacob.

Spring birthday packages are super slow this year. I don’t even really have a good excuse, but this little guy should be in Texas by now.
I am also moving slowly since yesterday afternoon after being struck down by a mystery foot ailment. Good thing the internet is there to self-diagnose, and in the end? I just might get a new pair of sandals. Thanks internet!
I am in the initial planning stages for a quilt for my mom, so I want that to be just right. I made my very first quilt for her back in 2002 maybe? In addition to that one, there are several baby quilts that will need to be done by the end of the year. Also, books. And yes, I probably need a break from all the food themed ones.

I’ve been reading food books again, and its got me thinking. About food. About nutrition. About sustainability. But not enough to motivate me to go out and cut some of this beautiful rhubarb to eat. I don’t have a big rhubarb history, so not really sure what to do with this except for putting it in a pie. Strawberries are coming in the same area, but a little slower. Can I just saute it in some butter?
I’m off tomorrow for Memorial day. Have a few sewing things planned, also maybe reading. But depends on the weather. In the RARE chance it doesn’t rain, I will only be found OUTSIDE.

Er, yes, the garden got planted last week. Sorry for the lack of updates. Tim has started Summer I classes and work is busybusybusy. But I am reading about happiness (wow, that sounds cheesy, its not. I swear), and would still count myself fairly high on a happiness scale. You know, in general. 8? 8.5? That’s pretty good! Maybe higher if I lived in Iceland, but certainly lower if I lived in Moldova.
Hope all moms had good Mother’s Day out there!

Things I think about: food, coffee, being passionate about my work, quilts, fabric, Loki, Tim, classes, going back to school, work, work, work, am I eating enough fruit, going to the farmer’s market, Web 2.0, interns, photography, SPEA, The Commission for Sustainability, recycling, living green, whether I can see the New Pornographers in concert, being a good person, travel, friends, organic food, allergies, natural leave-in conditioner, exercise, switching to gmail, having a baby someday, paint colors, books, The Clash, religion, gardening, health care, family, whether I should get new highlights, crosswords, publicity, and politics.
In no particular order, and not meant to be inclusive or exclusive.

I finally sat down tonight and after careful measuring and some inventiveness, the sticking point on Thiên’s quilt is solved. The binding (the last step!) is cut, pressed and sort of carefully folded waiting to be sewn on. My fingers are crossed that there is enough binding. Lord knows my math has been known to be wrong.
I am updating my booklist, rediscovering crossword puzzles (who knew Tim and I could be a good team?), and hoping that all my Texan friends go out and vote in the primary tomorrow. Yay voting!

Tim figured out how to play battleship on our dueling laptops, because yes. We are dorks. It was fun though and I won best two out of three.
I have books and reading on the brain, but haven’t really accomplished much in that category. To be on track for 52 books this year, I need 5 done by the end of January. Amy? Angela? I know others have reading goals. Maybe I should set a page count rather than a title count. Or is that cheating?
books, family, friends | Comments (5)Seriously Cold

Jenn and I braved the frigid temperatures to head out and go shopping today. Because going out in the cold all the way across town to get haircutting scissors and then spending an hour cutting my hair seemed way easier than actually just making an appointment. And it just HAD to be done today.
Supposed to be even colder tomorrow, so will stay in and work on Thien’s quilt. Maybe make a little soup, depending. Oh, and if you get a chance, go and see Atonement. It was great, but made me want to reread it when my reading list is already miles long.
books, friends | Comments (3)Bookcase for Giants

We aren’t giants, but would you expect anything less than a 9′ tall bookcase in this house? There are still boxes of “lesser” books in the basement that we can’t bear to part with, like my treasured S.E. Hinton collection, and Jane Hamilton, who I always read but never really like. I wonder sometimes how I ended up with so many books about Russian history, but it isn’t really a mystery. They came from the intersection of a little bit o’ cash slinging puffballs at the Lion, access to good used books (the Red Cross booksale), and a peaking interest after my undergrad. Having a brother who lends/buys you books about Stalingrad and Prince Felix Youssoupov doesn’t hurt either. I love having my books out, and it finally completes the living room.
I can’t reach the Russia shelf without a ladder, but Tim made me the perfect bookcase for this house!
