Rocket Larkspur

Posted under Home, San Antonio Comments Off

Even three day weekends go quickly. I had Friday off because it was the final weekend of
href=”http://www.fiesta-sa.org/” target=”_blank”>Fiesta here in San Antonio. But somehow, all of a sudden it is Sunday evening. Sort of like how all of a sudden it is summer. It went from being nice and cool (San Antonio winter) to hot, the past couple of days being in the 90s. We didn’t even do any of the other Fiesta events. I think that Tim had enough with working 20+ hours at Oyster Bake. There will always be other years.

Looked at more houses today. Most of you know (or can imagine) that Tim and I don’t agree too much when it comes to home decor…but have been pretty close in agreement when it comes to houses. We didn’t see the perfect house today either, but saw two that were really really really close to it. I was worried that we wouldn’t find something we liked in our price range in the location that we want with a big yard, good kitchen and something where we wouldn’t have to replace everything. But we found two today that were really close, so it is a relief that we will find something that I think that we will find perfect (or close to it). It still is a little weird to be walking around other people’s houses. Like are Tim and I old enough to be doing this? Wasn’t it just last year that we were struggling, crazy grad school kids?

Instead of attending the Fiesta events yesterday, Tim and I drove up to Fredricksburg to the
href=”http://www.wildseedfarms.com/” target=”_blank”>Wildseed Farm. It is a pretty big farm that grows wildflowers and then sells the seeds and other crafty crap. But the fields are beautiful! You walk around this little trail and some of them are just amazing, the Johnny Jump-up, Red Corn Poppies, Cornflowers, Tuber Vervain, California and Icelandic Poppies, phlox, and Rocket Larkspur which we were allowed to pick and bring home. We took lots of pictures and will hopefully have them up sometime soon (really. Fredricksburg is an old German town, so we had a lunch of sausages, weiner schnitzel, kraut, red cabbage and potatoes. All of it v. good. And the drive up through hill country was beautiful. Sorta like driving up through Brown County, but slightly scrubbier, shoter trees.

Tim and I crossed the street to see Ice Age this weekend, which is pretty funny. And we rented Spy Game, with Squinty Redford. Also pretty good. I finished reading Kitchen Confidential which made me love food all over again, and reminded me to not eat fish in a restaurant on Sunday or Monday. His advice is to not eat out Sunday at all, and if you do want to eat out, do it on either Thursday or Tuesday. Not very convienent, but sounds about right. Now I am on to lighter fare…finished Shopgirl and am on the Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing. So far so good. Have a hold on The Corrections, hope it comes in just in time for me to take to Colorado in two weeks!

Time for the Simpsons…

Bluebonnets

Posted under San Antonio, travel Comments Off

They have started
href=”http://www.fredericksburg-texas.com/wildflowers/” target=”_blank”>blooming…bluebonnets, black-eyed susans, blanketflowers (Indian blanket?)…in medians and around the sides of the roads around here. I don’t feel so bad about missing a beautiful southern Indiana fall, because we have bluebonnet spring in southern Texas.

Looked at a couple more houses today. Saw one that would work in our price range, but just wasn’t it somehow. Also looked at some new homes in a new area sorta far away from the city that actually left in some great old trees, so the neighborhood doesn’t look sanitized like some other new neighborhoods. But I think that we both pretty much have mixed feelings about a new house…so will have to think about that. But I don’t think that we are leaning that way for now. Not to mention that something wouldn’t be ready for about 6 months.

Tim and I went back to the zoo this Saturday, during the day this time. We had a great time and a great sunny day to go with it. We liked basically all of it, from the baby hippo to the cranes, giraffe, rhinos,
href=”http://www.panda.org/resources/publications/species/threatened/SpectacledBear/” target=”_blank”>bears, four different types of owls, a beautiful jaguar, a komodo dragon and Tim’s favorite: the
href=”http://www.zooregon.org/cards/Rainforest/lungfish.african.htm” target=”_blank”>lungfish. We did take some pictures and are hoping to have them posted soon…it takes a long time to scan and crop…but we really are hoping to have some up soon!

I am currently reading a book my dad gave me called
href=”http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060934913/002-9814031-7721625″ target=”_blank”>Kitchen Confidential. Part of it makes me nostalgic for the days of craziness working in a kitchen which I found educational, fun and a total rush. However, he also reminds me of the negatives…the heat, the trait most valued in a line cook is the ability to show up on time and work through pain. Not just little cut pain, but searing blister pain. Infected stitches pain. And did I mention the heat? But it is interesting and I laughed out loud when he talks about line cooks hiding towels when the linen delivery comes. I simply can not believe that there are other cooks out there that hide towels in the acoustic tiles in the ceiling of the kitchen (yes, really). I thought that I was pretty original for thinking of that. The ceiling! Who would ever think to look there? I guess more than one of us had that idea.

In the news recently, there is the Brazilians who are complaining that an episode of the Simpsons made their city look bad, and first I thought that they were just crazy. Then my friend Ashley told me that she was going to Knoxville, TN for two weeks to train some folks. She was wondering what she was going to do in Knoxville for two weeks. I told her that I didn’t think that it was going to be so bad because there was a World’s Fair there once and there was that big hemisphere thing there. The I caught myself, becuase the only real reason I know that is because of an episode of the Simpsons. You know the one where Bart gets a fake ID and they drive there on Spring Break? I told Ashley to look for the wig shop, and I am thinking now that maybe the Brazilians aren’t so crazy for complainig.

Have a great week everyone!

Softball Sized Hail

Posted under Home, San Antonio Comments Off

Okay, okay. It wasn’t softball sized, but it sure was loud at exactly midnight last night. Texas hail and flash floods appear to be our very own local natural disasters. Hey, at least its not earthquakes!

In house news…Tim and I looked at houses for the first time on Sunday. We had a realtor drive us around and we walked through 4 houses. Suffice to say that we didn’t find our dream house yet, but we will. Actually if we took different parts of each of the four houses (the kitchen window and built in bookshelves from #1, the yard from #4, the location of #2) we could have our dream home. We are looking again next weekend (and probably the weekend after that, and the weekend after that, and the weekend after that…) It is wierd to walk around some stranger’s home, sorta like you are snooping about.

In aquarium news…apparently all turtles need to be able to get out of the water at some point, so we have temporarily abandoned that project. But we did get another fish that is almost eel like and a frog! The frog is funny, but not very active. And you think that I talk about our fish/crab/frog a lot? Wait until we get a cat.

On Friday night Tim and I went to the
href=”http://www.sazoo-aq.org/” target=”_blank”>San Antonio Zoo for a special event called Feast with the Beast. There were food booths set up from local restaurants (sorta like a Taste of event), drinks, music and games for the kids (which we did not participate in). But it was fun and romantic to walk around the zoo during a beautiful night drinking margaritas and tasting different foods. Not all the animals were out…but many were and seeing that Grizzly right at the end was worth it. We are planning on going back during the day sometime soon.

Tim is working on a new design for our website (he loves it, what can I say?) and hopefully soon the guest book will be functional again. We are also working on adding more pics (from our xmas trip to Colorado, and at the women’s NCAA tourny). So stay tuned!
